Calming down during travelling
Travelling with an oversensitive child that expects to follow a rigid schedule can be challenging. Loud noises or sounds irritates our son and if a delay of any sort, not following the schedule or timing he has already been informed about, tears and a very distress child will be surfacing up. No more eager happy child that wants to get to the destination on time as per scheduled.
During travelling, we teach our son to understand his feelings and flags him on what made him happy, sad, mad, frustrated or feeling distressed. We usually must take a few minutes of time out to help him calm down and find what triggers any negative emotions if he feels overwhelmed in distress. For example, if a flight is delayed, we would ask him what made him mad or sad and why he is crying or sulking. As he talks out his emotions, we will point out that delays of flights happen everywhere and a lot of the times it is because of safety, either the weather was bad, or they had to service an engine or parts of the plane etc. As we talk with him and make him understand that the delay in a flight is unintentional and, in this world, a lot of things may get delayed because of unforeseen circumstances, he starts to calm down. His father will start to make jokes and we distract him with looking at the other flight schedules and gates numbers as he loves anything numbers. As we did this a few times, when there is a delay, he does not throw and tantrums or cries anymore. Try reading the sub-topic “Help Your Child Understand What Triggers the Feelings” for support in how to try and manage changes that always happens during travelling time.
Travelling can be stressful and to avoid this, we always asks our son to bring a bag filled with his things. Our son also carries a book that he can write in if he is bored waiting or if he needs to be by himself and cuts himself off from his surrounding. Writing down or drawing helps him to calm down. Reading also helps him to calm down. In calming your child, do bring things that calms them down during travelling. If it is not books, a favorite toy or puzzle that helps them to calm down, bring it along as to have a happy child to travel with you.
Our son enjoys to write, read and calculate while travelling. Long journeys that are tiring and time consuming are filled, nonetheless. He does watch movies and videos during travelling but as his safe haven are books, he will go back to books.
Izz was overwhelmed when we travelled using the train in a different country. He calmed himself down by going to a calmer and less noisy alley and read and wrote in his book. Only after 5 minutes he was fine, and we continued our journey.
The departure and arrival timing board is a favorite of our son. As he is inclined in numbers and alphabet, he will look at the gate numbers, flights, destinations, and timings. As we walk to our gate, he will be the happiest person as he tries to memorize the gates, various flights, and timing and be happy about it.
In all the airports that we have gone to, reading the departure and arrival screen has been a compulsory activity. While doing this, we also learned about different airlines and different destinations. It helps the communication development between us and our son.
Try to find an activity or an obsession your child has and have it planned to be on the traveling agenda as it works wonders at how just a bit of the time taken, could help calm a hyperlexic child during long travel hauls. As if this is done, it will contribute to the S.M.I.L.E.
